Any Space Can Be Smart With An Amazon AlexaGenerally, an Amazon Alexa listens and responds to requests like setting alarms, playing music, and answering questions that you might’ve looked up on your computer instead. The smart speaker is activated by voice commands when you address the device by saying “Alexa” before any request. People can turn any office or living space into a smart location by simply having an Amazon Alexa.
There is a long list of “smart” tasks that Alexa can do besides the general uses. There are also a variety of Alexa devices to use which include voice activated remote controls for all control systems, thermostats, security and doorbell cameras, alarm clocks and weather monitors, thermostats, outfit organizers, and of course home and portable speakers, connected by WiFi or Bluetooth. The number of devices provided leads to a wide range of smart home capability. Aside from asking about the weather, finding immediate answers to questions, or enjoying a fuller sound system (Amazon provides Alexa subwoofers too) you can also control the rest of your home with your voice as well. Camera feeds, temperature, locks, smart outlets, lighting, door bells and so much more. Alexa has over 50,000 skills available to users, and Amazon Alexa products also come in kits/bundle packages to ensure you have the best experience for a startup smart home or smart business. After connecting your Alexa to other devices and/or apps, such as your coffee maker, or smart vacuum, Alexa can do things for you without you moving a finger. Want your coffee ready in the morning? Ask Alexa to make your coffee at a certain time so it’s waiting when you wake up. Don’t have enough time to vacuum manually? Tell Alexa to start the vacuum for you. Need a personal gym trainer but don’t have time for the gym? Ask Alexa about her 7 minute workout. To see a detailed list about more of the significant skills Alexa can do, click here and here. We Are More uses an Amazon Alexa to control lighting, music, projection screens, and televisions in their office. Whether it’s a shop or business office, there are a lot of options for turning it into a smart space. Conference calls can be put on a louder speaker at board meetings, no more fumbling in the dark, just ask Alexa to turn on the lights when opening up in the morning or turning off lights when closing up at night. The most known feature and personal favorite is having control of background music, connect other smart speakers to a single device to play music throughout the store or office. There’s no doubt that these handy devices are becoming part of everyday life for some. They’re easy to use, timesaving, and cost effective. If you’re someone who doesn’t want to spend a whole lot on installations for a smart home or smart business, then Amazon Alexa is a perfect fit for you. Take it from We Are More, they love Alexa! Maui's Growth In Population and TechnologyAccording to the US Census Bureau of 2017 County and MSA Population Estimates, “Maui’s population has increased by 11,423 residents since 2000.” As population increases, a variation of technology being used increases as well. Keeping Maui on the move through the demand of technology for the population growth considering new homes, and businesses is part of what keeps the community thriving. Hawaii state is always progressing towards what’s next when it comes to technology. Along with its location in the Pacific, Hawaii is a “natural portal between the US and Asian high technology markets.” The population growth has led to more small business startups and more developers finding new housing opportunities. Through this, people are trying to find more and more ways to be cost effective and environmentally efficient. The biggest way to be Eco friendly and save money might be a shocker to those uneducated on the topic, but technology is what saves money and the environment. Look at it this way; what is the purpose of technology? Technology was created to make things easier, to make things more affordable in the long run. We Are More continues to offer quality technology installations and administrative help to those who want to join the move from the past to the now. Maui is a large tourism location and with the help of technology it will continue to flourish. Adding technology infrastructure to hotels, condos, and rental homes makes the paradise life more, well, more paradise. Simple efficiencies like temperature control add to the island experience. Locals know how hot it can get, mixed with Hawaii’s humidity, it’s satisfying coming back to a room with a comfortably cool temperature that is set by the guests themselves. With Hawaii having some of the highest electric rates in the country, electricity bills are often ridiculous for the average person. In fact “electricity prices in Hawaii are more than twice the national average.” Technology like solar panels are a perfect example on how the everyday citizen can cut back on sky rocketing monthly electric bills. Solar aids those who would rather spend a lump sum of money in one month, than hundreds of dollars every month. There is a long list of ways that Maui can and is using technology for the betterment of the beautiful island and its people. Companies like We Are More want to help other businesses and home owners join the move. By looking into the benefits of technology and what it takes to keep up with the times. Not just to join a bandwagon, but to be more cost effective as a community and continue to care for our environment utilizing technology in any way we can. No copyright infringement is intended. If you live in a high-risk area, consider the benefits of a home security system before opting it out of your budget. Security systems can be cheaper than expected and worth the cost when the reality is that only a handful of break ins result in thieves going to jail. However, there are still people who don’t feel the need for a security system but want to take persuasions when it comes to the dangerous world we live in. Which is why I've listed 15 ways to secure a home without a security system.
1. If it’s not already obvious, lock your front door. It’s funny because intruders usually don’t walk through the front door. In fact, according to former police officer and U.S. army Captain Alexia Chianis only 34% of thieves enter through front doors! Having your doors locked is still a good idea though, you never know if that 34% is hanging out in your neighborhood. 2. Lock your other doors and all your windows! Without any audio or visual alarm system/surveillance, your best bet is to lock your house up! Only about 30% of burglars come through the windows or other doors (like garage doors) of a home. Including front doors, that’s a total of 64% of entry ways for a burglar to get into your house. Keeping all doors and windows locked while your away is an immediate plus for keeping your home safe! When you are home, especially when your alone, at least keep your doors locked. 3. If you’re home alone or with children, always keep a cellphone on you. Based on a crime victimization survey by the U.S. Department of Justice, 3 out of 10 times someone is home during a burglary and 7% out of 28% of these intrusions result in violent misconduct. Having a cellphone on you during a break in will make it easier to call for help and will result in police getting to your house before anything brutally criminal takes place. 4. Keep your most prized possessions hidden or locked away in a safe. In the circumstance that someone does break into your home, whether you’re there or not, it’s wise to keep your valuable belongings locked away. Precious, sentimental, and high-priced items such as jewelry, keep sakes, guns, camera’s, music equipment and office equipment should be kept in a separate locked up space away from master bedrooms. 5. Make sure your master bedroom is free of prized possessions. The master bedroom is usually the first place a thief will target to steal from because this is where most people keep their most expensive things. If a burglar goes into a master bedroom with nothing to grab at, the chances of something valuable being stolen is diminished. This not only leaves the burglar confused but also gives them less time to look for something to steal. In most instances it only takes a burglar less than ten minutes to enter and exit a home with something in hand. Without anything to steal, burglars will most likely think they are running out of time and flee the home empty handed before heading to another room. 6. Get a security camera or two. Getting a few security cameras doesn’t result in a full security system, but it does result in more security! If a home has been broken into and the burglar got away, the odds of it being broken into again by the same burglar are high. It will also be looked be vulnerable to other thieves. Having a security camera’s around will ward them off. If you absolutely can’t budge to get some cameras. A little trick is getting old security camera’s that don’t work anymore or making fake DIY security cameras to put up around your house. With the illusion of security, it’s more likely that burglars won’t bother to break in, and old thieve won’t bother re-entry. 7. Double up on locks. Putting extra locks on doors and windows will always be a great addition to safety when your home or away on vacation. If unlocking a bunch of locks is too much of a hassle for you, consider trading traditional locks for smart locks. Never use a key again and ditch the spare key under the mat, access your home using a code instead. 8. If you have a spare key, don’t keep it at your house. Give it to a trusted neighbor or relative to keep at their house instead. When you need your spare key, you can get it from them and eliminate all risks of having it left where potential attackers can easily find it. The smartest thing to do is keep it with you, but the second-best thing is to leave it with a friend. 9. Use peel and stick alarms. These alarms are inexpensive compared to security and surveillance networks but still give off a warning during intrusions. Alarms like this are small enough not to be detected and loud enough to be heard by close neighbors, so you can feel comfortable in or outside of your home. 10. Replace your home mailbox with a security mailbox. Keep mail thieves away from your holiday cards, bank statements, and personal letters by installing a security mailbox. A standard mailbox can be as cheap as ten dollars from Walmart, but will it account for stolen mail? I highly recommend spending the extra thirty dollars if you’re worried about mail thieves. 11. Keep your yard free of tools/toys. When you have multiple things laying around in your yard, it makes it a lot easier for by passers to scope out your belongings and take things from your property when you aren’t looking. Whether it’s at night when everyone in your home is sleeping or in the middle of the day when you’re at work or school. The chances of someone stealing things from your yard are lower when there’s nothing in your yard to steal, go figure! 12. Invest in building a fence and having a gate for your yard/driveway. Having your space enclosed will significantly decrease onlookers from coming into your yard. With a fence you don’t have to worry about the kids leaving their bikes out in the driveway or worry if someone will dismantle and take that swing set you just bought, and never have random people turning around in your driveway again! 13. Keep your house lit. Leaving a light on at home when you’re out for the night will leave an illusion that someone is there and will influence burglars to wait and try another time to avoid being caught. Lights around your yard, or behind shrubbery will also eliminate hiding places. Without a place to hide, thieves are less likely to try breaking in because they won’t have a secure escape route. 14. Keep in touch with your neighbors and look out for each other’s property. Criminal activity is less likely to follow through in tight knit communities where everyone looks out for each other. When neighbors are away, let them know of any fishy activity you see at their homes and communicate about them doing the same for you while you’re away on trips. This not only creates trust between you and your neighbors but ensures your property will be looked out for even without a surveillance system. 15. Make sure to turn off location services when you’re away. You never know who could be stalking your whereabouts through social media. If you’re away on a trip, wait till you come back home to post pictures and videos. Or, if you have the “posting bug” and can’t help but do it, be sure to keep your location a secret. Don’t broadcast the dates you’ll be away either, this could potentially set up a time frame for someone to break into your home. 16. Implement Unbreakable Glass! Yes, it's a thing! Check out our friends at Riot Glass to find out more about how you can protect your home by switching out all windows and doors with unbreakable glass for extra security without a security system. There are three main types of lighting; 1. Ambient lighting creates lighting that’s as natural as can be. It isn’t overpowering or straining to the eyes and covers the whole space with natural lighting. 2. Accent lighting puts attention on it’s subject. Lighting like this is usually for displaying items such as sculptures, showcased collections, or bookstands. 3. Task lighting is for none other than doing tasks. When you cook, read, or knit, task lighting shines light on what you’re doing with concentration lighting to help you do your tasks. Then there’s different forms of lighting within each type category. Whether it’s lighting for weddings, parties, concerts, bedrooms, churches, dining rooms, offices, kitchen, or theater lighting, the following are some types that you can use to your personal preference. 4. Pin spot lighting is a form of Accent lighting, highlights certain features such as a center piece, or certain plants outdoors. 5. String lights, to hang around the venue either vertically or horizontally would be ambient lighting. Weddings typically display this type of lighting but in homes, this decoration is often found in bedrooms as a recreation of stars indoors. 6. Color wash lighting changes the tone of any landscape or room with colors. Lighting with different colors is a fun way to express different moods and play around with different hues and vibes. 7. Another fun way to do lighting is by putting stencils over the lights to create designs on backdrops, this is called gobos lighting. Fun for children’s rooms or having pretty patterns on stages or at weddings. For any of these options it’s best to use LED lights. LED means “light-emitting diode.” They don’t heat up as much as regular lightbulbs and they don’t take up as much energy making them cost effective. They’re used as smart bulbs because they can be linked to WIFI and synced with smart home devices to turn off and on with voice commands or through certain apps. No matter what type of lighting you use or need, there’s a form for you and all your lighting needs. Call We Are More for any lighting installations or set ups at events, theaters, weddings etc. We can make your dreams come true! Smart marine technology consists of everything that a smart home would, plus a few extras. Just to name a few, security systems, audio-visual systems, WiFi, radar, distress signals, autopilots, GPS, air conditioning, thermal imaging, monitors, drones, and more.
Imagine having a sonar device reachable from anywhere on the boat, or trackers for fishing. If you’re a fisherman, pulling out a phone or tablet might not be so easy on the water, good thing you can install charging and mounting devices to have electronics easily accessible. Using a single smart device to wirelessly manage all systems on a smart boat isn’t just easier on the captain but also on his wallet. Instead of installing multiple devices for different tasks, racking up a costly amount, owners can opt for single installations that work throughout the vessel as a network. Using a single control panel or app no matter where you are. Even after leaving a boat at its dock, people can continue to feel safe with security system installments. These systems can be accessed through any mobile smart device from anywhere in the world. Continually keep an eye on your boat while travelling, without worry. Since most boats are usually unattended it's smart to stay connected to them. Aside from security camera’s giving off visual, you can also set up a sensor alert system that tells you if there’s activity around your boat, or if your boat is being maneuvered when you aren’t there. Security features aren’t just for intruders to get caught; you can also watch for rising tides, electrical problems on board, weather conditions and so on. Owners can also feel safe while on the water, with a control center that monitors everything from engine temperature to alerting you if the anchor is still down. Tap into all sound controls and lighting as well. Turn up the tunes, change the songs, or shuffle your playlists through voice commands, a smart device, or control panel. Switch from dim dinner lighting on the water to neon hues in seconds or keep it casual by simply having regular lights you can turn off and on without having to flip a switch. You can also install features that’ll have everything on the boat turned on and ready to go before you step onboard. There are almost an endless number of features that you can equip your boat with to make it smart. These fast-moving technologies are making their way to boats all over the world. Call We Are More for any estimates or installations, we have all your solutions. Having more flexibility on the ocean is a must, give it a try. We all know, whether it’s good or bad, celebrities are influential people. How about their homes? These are a few of the most influential smart homes owned by celebrities. Houses like the one pictured will make people re-think using a control system in their own home or business. These mansions are tailored to wealthy homeowners, but any building can be turned into a smart home, even for those with a budget.
The beautiful home above is in Colorado and owned by none other than Oprah Winfrey. It features an in-home theater, a jacuzzi room, a guest house and more. The billionaire also has smart home automation set up with remote-controlled systems throughout her household, such as being able to water her plants while she’s away. Not to mention her “smart” driveway, with a heated ground during the colder months to keep it clear of ice and snow buildup, as well as notification sensors that tell her when people arrive at her home even when she’s on vacation. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, uses the luxury of having a smart home to a different extent. He has an electronic butler installation within his house. The voice automation is named “Jarvis,” after Iron Man’s own AI butler. He’s run through an app wired to listen and respond to typescript or speech. Unlike Siri and Alexa, “Jarvis” is used to control everything in the home from locks, lighting, entries, audio-visual sound systems, temperature, and he’s even able to perform meal preparation. A mansion like Bill Gates’ can’t go unnoticed in this category. Even his pool is equipped with an underwater sound system. There’s nothing like being able to listen to music under water, right? Touch screen tablets in every room allow his guests to control music, lights, and temperature in their own space. However, his home automation goes even farther, guests are given devices that connect them to all smart home controls throughout the entire mansion. Actress Sofia Vergara knew exactly what she wanted out of her Smart Home and got it. She’s able to relax and enjoy as her automation systems manage all security, appliances, and any entertainment within her home. She’s also planning on moving up the scale by adding an in-home robot much like Zuckerberg’s J.A.R.V.I.S. to do things around the house. By the looks of it, she’ll have that installation done as well. Feeling influenced? Everyone deserves to stay connected, safe, and valued. Whether it’s a sound system, security, lighting, temperature control, all the above or more, look into smart home installation and see what you would want out of it. How could it help you? If money is an issue, remember that depending on what or how much you want done, you don't have to be a billionaire to put some smarts into a structure. We Are More specializes in automation installments and would be happy to assist any home or business with an interest in this leading technology. No copyright infringement is intended. Sound Systems For Home TheatersWho else likes to boost their audio-visual experience with surround sound? In the average home theater, there are usually no more than seven speakers and no less than four. Along with those speakers, every booming sound system has a subwoofer. Each speaker has a separate task, which I’ll explain below. aside from the subwoofer, there is a center channel speaker, a speaker to the left and one to the right, these would be your front speakers, then you have the surround speakers. The subwoofer is a loudspeaker component designed to reproduce very low bass frequencies. It's what makes vibrations during the intense scenes in a movie. Whenever there is an explosion, an earthquake, or something of the sort in any film, a subwoofer is the reason you can feel the room shaking. The low rumbling you hear and feel is a result of the sub. It’s not only the bass in the room but also the base for the rest of the sound system. Front left and right speakers are used to get a sound that travels the width of an amount of space. If you were sitting in a home theater, these are the speakers that would normally be facing the audience on opposite sides of the room (hence one on the left and one on the right). These speakers move sounds from one side of the room to the other by accommodating the center channel speaker to put you in the action on your screen. No one likes watching a movie where the sound is lagging behind the lips moving on a movie. Yet, you know exactly what I’m talking about. A center channel speaker is important-- aren’t they all? -- because they’re the reason that what you see on screen matches the sound you hear. It’s the speaker that spills all dialogue and gives out majority of special effect sounds throughout films.
Surround sound speakers do exactly what their name says. They give you surround sound. These speakers have different placement based off personal desires but typically they are behind the audience; either placed on the ground, up on a table/desk of some kind, or up on a wall. Surround sound speakers are like the toppings on your favorite ice cream sundae. They complete the set up. These speakers give off the sound that submerges the audience in whatever is on their screen. They lock everything in place. You don’t need to have an actual theater in your home to have a home theater system set up. These speakers come in many sizes and can be adjusted to make any sized room feel and sound like an actual theater room. systems like this are great to set up just for listening to music as well. Just as an extra tip, if you’re one of the few who don’t know, you will also need a surround sound Receiver aka an AV Receiver. A receiver is the heart of a home theater system. The way a human heart pumps blood in and out of itself and then throughout the human body, a receiver pumps input and output frequencies of sound throughout the speakers. So go try it out! Call We Are More if you need help with installations or if you need to purchase any speakers; fair warning though-- we will only offer you the best of the best. No copyright infringement is intended. Are Smart Buildings Saving The Planet?Shockingly, there are a lot of people who don’t know how detrimental power plant emissions are. Smart Homes and Smart Businesses play a big part in helping to reduce that waste. According to encyclopedia.com, power plant emissions are from the “combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, gas, and oil. These emissions include sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter, and hazardous air pollutants,” which are all harmful to the environment.
What happens when the release of burned coal, damaging oils, and fossil fuels enter the atmosphere? Simply put, air pollution. Since air pollution is made up of chemicals, it damages the earth. National Geographic lets us know that these chemicals are deteriorative to the human body, harmful to animals as well as plants and can even damage buildings. Reducing these chemicals protects the air and decreases unnatural heat in the atmosphere. How do we reduce these chemicals? Reduce energy use. When people think of smart buildings, they may also think that those buildings are using more energy than a regular building, but that’s not true. On top of smart buildings having the capability of controlling exactly how much energy they use, they can also use eco friendly building materials, LED lighting, solar panels, household water conversion, wind turbines, harness geothermal energy, sustainable insulation, energy efficient appliances, water re-use, rainwater harvesting to enhance the savings. In result, these buildings are recognized for reducing the use of power plants. The bigger the building the more energy being used, and the more critical it is for building to switch over to smart technology. As an example, when hotels become “smart-hotels” they help save the earth in a bigger way because they usually take up more energy than a single bedroom home. In hotels, guests can partake in environmental resolutions too. There is always a “one touch green button” that guests can press to engage with the hotel’s ecological goals. We Are More uses a control system called Control4 Automation to regulate energy use for their installation of smart buildings. Just being able to “set thermostats accordingly” or control audio-visual systems from wherever you are reduces energy waste. Business buildings with automated lights, TVs, sound systems, etc. can also make “closing time” quick and easy by shutting down everything at once. Improved energy management should be a “must” for everyone. Efficient energy use not only benefits your wallet but also the Earth. The less energy being used by utilizing better energy control through smart buildings, the less chemicals being released into the air, the healthier our planet will be. Thank you, to anyone who owns, manages, or works in a smart building. You are helping to save the environment with technology whether you know it or not. No copyright infringement is intended. |
